Existing Conditions Compilation
June 17, 2003—To date, the SMTC has compiled all necessary and relevant existing conditions data and information for use in the Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan. The SMTC has completed a sidewalk inventory for the entire study area, where staff met with towns and villages and mapped sidewalk locations in each municipality.
Bicycle/motor vehicle and pedestrian/motor vehicle collision data were also collected and summarized. The SMTC hired market research firm Zogby International to complete a Bicycle and Pedestrian Awareness survey by phone in Onondaga County. The purpose of the survey was to gain an understanding of how many residents are using bicycles and walking as modes of
transportation and their frequency of travel; residents' perception of the current system; residents' understanding of traffic laws and safety issues; and to determine what would encourage the public to bike or walk more often.
Finally, as part of the existing conditions analysis, the SMTC has completed a Bicycle Suitability Map for Onondaga County that portrays the suitability of the existing transportation network for bicycle utility in Onondaga County and the City of Syracuse through a series of ratings. The map also shows multi-use trails, recreational trails and includes safety
information, such as legal requirements, "share the road" and "share the trail" guidelines. Read about the Map.
This existing conditions information was presented to the public on May 28, 2003. View the meeting presentation.
