Sidewalk Inventory
July 1, 2002—Throughout the spring, the Syracuse Metropolitan Transportation Council (SMTC) met with towns and villages throughout the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) study area, regarding a generalized sidewalk
inventory. Since then, the SMTC has been inputting all gathered sidewalk inventory information, and entering it into the SMTC’s Geographical Information Systems (GIS) mapping system.
Many municipalities have expressed an interest in receiving a copy of the map once the SMTC has finished the GIS work. This will allow the municipalities to gain a better understanding of the facilities available in their respective
jurisdictions, as well as throughout the MPO study area.
The SMTC would like to thank all the municipalities within the SMTC MPO area for their participation in this endeavor.
April 1, 2002—The SMTC will also be inventorying pedestrian facilities throughout Onondaga County, including the City of Syracuse. Throughout 2002, the SMTC will be contacting the towns
and villages within the County, asking them to assist with a generalized sidewalk inventory through an interactive mapping activity. The SMTC will provide the towns and villages with a map, and ask each municipality to note where their sidewalks exist. The data obtained will be summarized and included as part of the Final Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan document. This is
just one of many ways that towns and villages will be able to participate in this planning project.
