Bicycle and Pedestrian Awareness Survey

May 1, 2003—This past Fall, the SMTC hired the market research firm, Zogby International, to conduct a Bicycle and Pedestrian Awareness Survey. Four-hundred Onondaga County residents were surveyed on a September 2002 weekend via telephone in an effort to assist the SMTC in determining (1) the public's awareness of bicycle and pedestrian safety, (2) the public's knowledge and opinion of the existing conditions for bicycle and pedestrian travel in Onondaga County, and (3) how often the public is currently utilizing these systems. A brief overview of survey results is provided below.

  • 70% of all survey respondents walk or jog regularly. Of those that walk or jog, they primarily walk/jog for exercise (44%) or personal enjoyment (33%). 16% walk/jog as a means of transportation.
  • Over half (64%) of all survey respondents indicated that they have access to a bicycle. Of those that ride a bike, 37% said they ride regularly and that they primarily ride for personal enjoyment (43%) or exercise (41%). 13% ride their bicycle as a means of transportation.
  • 61% of all survey respondents feel that Onondaga County is pedestrian-friendly. 34% feel that the county is not pedestrian-friendly, citing a lack of sidewalks or lack of sidewalks leading to desired destinations as the primary reason for feeling this way.
  • 41% of all survey respondents feel that Onondaga County is bicycle-friendly. 48% feel that the county is not bicycle-friendly, citing a lack of bike lanes/routes to desired locations as the main reason why they feel this way.

The SMTC and Zogby International also asked what places in Onondaga County survey respondents would like to be able to reach by bike or on foot. The chart below summarizes the respondents' picks.

Parks/Recreational Trails 28%

Schools/colleges 13%

Sharing the Road SafelyJuly 1, 2002—As part of the data compilation portion of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, the SMTC will be developing a Bicycle and Pedestrian Awareness Survey to be given throughout Onondaga County and the City of Syracuse.

The results of this survey will enable the SMTC to determine the public’s awareness of bicycle and pedestrian safety, the public’s knowledge of the existing conditions of bicycle and pedestrian travel, and how often the public is currently utilizing these systems. The results of this survey will be included in the final Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan.

The SMTC is in the process of contracting with a market research firm to assist with the survey. The survey will be administered this summer via telephone through the firm’s call center. The SMTC has been working with a subcommittee of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan’s Study Advisory Committee to develop the survey questions, and approve the final survey prior to its administration by the market research firm.

Walking for a Healthy HeartApril 1, 2002—As part of the data compilation portion of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, the SMTC will be compiling a bicycle and pedestrian awareness survey. To be distributed throughout Onondaga County and the City of Syracuse, the survey will assess residents' knowledge of safety in regards to bicycle and pedestrian activity. The SMTC will be developing this survey over the next several months.
